Luck pillars: gender direction, start age, and decade steps

Quick answer: Luck pillars (大运, sometimes called decade pillars) are a sequence of stem–branch pairs that step through a life in roughly ten-year blocks. On this site they start from the month pillar, run forward for a yang-year male or a yin-year female and backward otherwise, and begin at an age derived from the time between birth and the neighbouring solar term at the classical rate of 3 days = 1 year. Because direction depends on gender, if you choose "prefer not to say" we omit luck pillars rather than guess.

This page explains the rule our engine uses. The normative technical write-up is methodology § Luck pillars. The classical direction and rate are summarised on Classical sources (Sanming Tonghui, 卷二 論大運).

What luck pillars are (and are not)

A natal BaZi chart has four pillars fixed by the birth instant. Luck pillars are an additional sequence used in traditional practice to mark long phases after birth. Each luck pillar is itself a Heavenly Stem + Earthly Branch pair, lasting ten years in the usual counting.

They are not:

  • a substitute for the natal chart
  • a monthly horoscope
  • a prediction engine on this site
  • something we invent when gender is withheld

Annual pillars (流年) are a different layer: they follow the BaZi year, which changes at Li Chun. For the 2027 year change as calendar fact, see When does the 2027 BaZi year of the Goat start?. This page stays on decade luck pillars.

Direction: who goes forward, who goes backward

The Sanming Tonghui states the direction rule in the chapter on luck pillars. In the wording we quote on Classical sources:

陽男陰女,大運以生日後未來節氣日時為數,順而行之;陰男陽女,大運以生日前過去節氣日時為數,逆而行之。

"For a yang male or yin female, count the days and hours from birth forward to the coming solar term, and run the luck pillars forward; for a yin male or yang female, count back to the solar term that has passed, and run them backward." provisional translation

On this site:

  • Yang year means the year stem is yang (Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren).
  • Yin year means the year stem is yin (Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui).
  • Forward means the luck sequence follows the sixty-pillar cycle onward from the month pillar.
  • Backward means it steps the other way.
Year stem polarity Male Female
Yang year Forward Backward
Yin year Backward Forward

That is the same matrix practitioners summarise as "yang male / yin female forward; otherwise reverse."

Gender withheld. Our form offers "prefer not to say". In that case the chart shows natal pillars and strength but no luck pillar strip. We do not default to male or female.

Start age: three days to a year

Direction tells you which solar term to measure toward. The start age is how long after birth the first luck pillar is said to begin.

Classical rate (as used on this site):

  • 3 days = 1 year
  • equivalently 1 day = 4 months
  • and 2 hours = 10 days of start-age credit

We apply the distance to the minute: 4,320 minutes of distance count as one year of start age. Other calculators round to the day or to the double hour, so published start ages can differ by days to a few months even when pillars match. We show the start age and calendar year we use on the chart.

Forward case (sketch)

Birth → measure forward to the next jie solar term (the term that opens the next BaZi month) → convert that duration at 3 days = 1 year → that age is when the first forward luck pillar begins → each following pillar adds ten years.

Backward case (sketch)

Birth → measure back to the previous jie term → convert the same way → first luck pillar begins at that age → sequence steps backward along the cycle.

Solar terms themselves are astronomical (Sun longitude steps). The same Astronomy Engine pipeline that builds month pillars builds these boundaries; see methodology.

How the stem–branch sequence is built

  1. Take the month pillar as the anchor next to birth.
  2. Step forward or backward along the sexagenary (60) stem–branch cycle.
  3. Emit a list of decade pillars with start ages accumulating by +10 years after the first.

The day and hour pillars do not set luck direction. They still matter for the natal read and for whether true solar time moved you across a month or day boundary before luck is even computed — see true solar time and the Zi-hour day boundary.

What our chart shows

When gender is provided, a full chart includes:

  • direction (forward / backward)
  • start age (minute-precise under our arithmetic)
  • the sequence of luck pillars with nominal year ranges
  • the engine version on the receipt (bazi-lichun-jieqi-tst-v1 as of the methodology page)

When gender is omitted, luck pillars are absent by design. That is a product rule, not a classical silence: the classical rule needs the male/female branch of the matrix.

Verification note from methodology: luck pillars were compared on 5,000 random births with lunar-javascript's minute-precise method; direction and pillars matched, and start offset was within one day. Details: methodology § verification.

Luck pillars in a report chapter

The sample BaZi report shows how a Complete-style PDF can narrate decade steps as structure: which stem–branch is in force, how it sits relative to the Day Master (Ten God label), and how season language is usually framed. Sample chapters are educational layout, not a forecast of events in those decades.

We still do not output a favourable element for a luck pillar or a natal chart.

Where calculators disagree

Topic Our choice Other common choice
Direction matrix Sanming Tonghui yang-male / yin-female forward Same matrix (usually); errors come from wrong year polarity
Start-age arithmetic Minute-precise, 4320 min = 1 year Round to day or double hour
Gender missing Omit luck pillars Sometimes assume a gender
First step from Month pillar along the 60-cycle Same idea; display formatting differs

If two sites agree on natal pillars but disagree on start age by a month or two, check rounding before assuming a different classical school. If they disagree on forward vs backward, check year-stem polarity and the gender entered.

How this fits the Learn path

On Learn BaZi, luck pillars come after you can read natal pillars, Day Master, elements and Ten Gods. Decade labels are hard to use if the month pillar or Day Master is still uncertain — especially near Li Chun, when year and month both flip.

Sexagenary step, visually

The sixty stem–branch pairs run in a fixed order (Jia-Zi, Yi-Chou, Bing-Yin … to Gui-Hai, then back to Jia-Zi). Luck pillars walk that necklace forward or backward from the month pillar. We do not jump by animal only; the stem and branch move together as a pair.

If the month pillar is, for example, 丁卯 Ding-Mao, a forward sequence begins with the next pairs after Ding-Mao; a backward sequence begins with the pairs before it. Display formatting (columns vs rows, Western year ranges vs 虚岁) can differ by product; the underlying step should not.

Start age versus "which Gregorian year"

Start age answers "how long after birth does the first luck pillar begin?" Mapping that age onto calendar years depends on the natal birthday and on whether a UI prints birthday-anniversary boundaries or January boundaries. When comparing screenshots from two apps, compare direction + pillar sequence + start age first; year-label formatting second.

Gender, privacy and omission

Some readers prefer not to share gender with a calculator. Our omission rule respects that preference at the cost of hiding luck pillars. Natal BaZi (four pillars, Day Master, strength, Ten Gods labels on natal stems) remains available. Reports that include a luck chapter will need the same gender input the live chart needs; otherwise that chapter should stay absent rather than assumed.

Relation to annual pillars (one clear contrast)

Luck pillars (大运) Annual year pillar (流年)
Length ~10 years each 1 BaZi year
Anchor Month pillar ± direction Li Chun year change
Needs gender? Yes (on this site) No
2027 page? No — see luck page Yes — 2027 Goat

Keeping these distinct prevents a common mix-up: treating a decade pillar as if it were only the animal of a single Spring Festival year.

Do luck pillars change my Day Master?

No. The Day Master is the day stem of the natal chart. Luck pillars are a separate sequence. (A luck stem can share the Day Master's element or stand in any Ten God relation to it; that does not rename the Day Master.)

Why does the form ask for gender?

Only for luck-pillar direction. Natal pillars, Day Master, hidden stems, Ten Gods and our strength score do not use gender.

Is start age the same as Western "age"?

It is a traditional BaZi counting convention from solar-term distance. Treat it as the site's published arithmetic, and compare the receipt if another tool differs.

Can I see luck pillars without creating an account?

Yes. Cast a chart on the home form, include gender, and read the luck strip on the result. Accounts matter for saving and for buying reports; the calculation itself is on the chart page.

Where is the classical source for the 3-days rule?

Sanming Tonghui 卷二 論大運, discussed on Classical sources and applied on methodology § luck. We do not reproduce the chapter's broken worked example whose numbers do not add up internally.

Minute arithmetic worked small example (illustrative)

Suppose the next jie term is exactly 9 days after birth (forward case). At 3 days = 1 year, start age ≈ 3.0 years. If the gap is 9 days + 12 hours, add half a day of credit: 12 hours = 6×2 hours → about 60 days of start-age credit in the classical 2 hours = 10 days scaling, i.e. roughly two months on top of the 3-year base — numbers practitioners often round. Our engine instead converts the entire gap to minutes and divides by 4,320. The teaching point is not the decimal; it is that rounding policy, not mystical disagreement, explains many cross-site gaps.

Always prefer the on-chart start age over this sketch.

Next step: Calculate your chart with birth place and gender if you want luck pillars, then open the receipt and confirm direction and start age.
