Ding Fire Day Master (丁, Yin Fire)

Quick answer: Ding (丁) is the fourth of the ten Heavenly Stems: Yin Fire. You have a Ding Fire Day Master if the stem of your day pillar is Ding. The Di Tian Sui pictures Ding as fire that is "soft and centred, bright and warm within", and the commentary calls it warm fire (溫煖之火). That image is a way to remember the stem's nature, not a verdict on anyone's personality.

The classical image: what the Di Tian Sui says

The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓) is traditionally attributed to Jing Tu of the Song dynasty, although its authorship is uncertain. It describes each stem in a short verse. This is its verse on Ding:

丁火柔中,內性昭融。抱乙而孝,合壬而忠。旺而不烈,衰而不窮,如有嫡母,可秋可冬。

"Ding fire is soft and centred, bright and warm within. It embraces Yi like a devoted child and joins Ren like a loyal minister. Strong, it is not fierce; weak, it is not spent. If it has its true mother, it can cope in autumn and winter."

— Di Tian Sui, "天干論", text as in the Di Tian Sui Chanwei (ctext.org). The Wikisource edition misprints 抱乙而考 for 抱乙而孝. Translation: PillarChart editorial team. The referent of 「嫡母」 ("true mother") is still being checked against the Chanwei notes before we gloss it more tightly.

Line by line:

  • "Soft and centred… bright within" (柔中,內性昭融). Ding is the focused form of Fire. The Wikisource note calls it "warm fire" (溫煖之火), in contrast with Bing's blazing fire.
  • "Embraces Yi… joins Ren." Yi wood feeds Ding; Ren water combines with Ding (丁壬合). The verse uses kinship and loyalty metaphors for those stem relations — chart language, not a character sketch of the person.
  • "Strong, not fierce; weak, not spent." A statement about how yin fire behaves across strength bands: even when Prosperous it is not Bing's blaze; even when weak it is not empty.
  • "If it has its true mother…" (如有嫡母). Commentators debate what 「嫡母」 points to (often read as the proper resource / wood support). We flag the reading as provisional until the Chanwei note is checked line by line.

Yin, yang and the Fire element

Ding and Bing are the two forms of Fire. Bing is yang (blazing); Ding is yin (warm and centred).

Season and climate: why your birth month matters

The month branch tells you the season Ding was born into, and so how much support it starts with. In the seasonal scheme of the Sanming Tonghui, Fire is:

Season (month branches) Fire's state What it means for Ding
Spring (寅 Yin, 卯 Mao) Strong 相 Nourished by wood
Summer (巳 Si, 午 Wu) Prosperous 旺 In season, strongly supported
Sixth month (未 Wei) Resting 休 Spending itself on earth
Autumn (申 Shen, 酉 You) Trapped 囚 Held back
Winter (亥 Hai, 子 Zi) Dead 死 Out of season, controlled by water

The table follows the Sanming Tonghui text, which places Earth's season in the sixth month. The other Earth months (辰, 戌, 丑) are treated in more than one way across schools. See Five Elements.

Climate adjustment in the Qiongtong Baojian

The Qiongtong Baojian (窮通寶鑑) reads every Day Master month by month, asking first whether the chart needs warming, cooling or moistening. Its section on Ding in a key season opens:

正月丁火,甲木当权,乃为母旺,非庚不能噼甲,何以引丁,姑用庚金。

"Ding fire in the first month: Jia wood is in command, so the mother is Prosperous; without Geng to split the Jia, there is nothing to lead Ding out — so the book provisionally uses Geng metal." — Qiongtong Baojian, 正月丁火 (Wikisource). Translation: PillarChart editorial team. Climate / adjustment lines only; the book also contains fixed fortune pronouncements, which we do not reproduce.

For other parts of the year, the book's climate recommendations for Ding include the following (paraphrased):

  • Autumn: Ding is retreating and soft. The book specialises in Jia wood, may take Geng to open Jia, and may borrow Bing to warm metal and dry wood (paraphrased from 三秋丁火; climate lines only).
  • Winter: Ding is slightly cold. The book specialises in Geng and Jia together — "Jia is Geng's good friend" — arguing that without both, Ding is hard to lead out (「耑用庚甲」).
  • Early summer (巳 Si): Ding rides prosperity; the book still takes Jia to lead Ding and Geng to open Jia, and warns against Gui dampening the setup (paraphrased from 四月丁火).

These describe what one classical method looks for, given the season. They are not predictions, and other methods may weigh the same chart differently. Where schools disagree on a rule, see How we calculate your chart.

Is your Ding Fire weak or strong?

Three questions decide it, in this order: season (the month branch), roots (Ding among the hidden stems, especially in 午 Wu, 未 Wei or 戌 Xu), and support from other stems (more Fire, or Wood as resource). Our calculator scores this with a published point method. Here are two Ding charts it produced:

Favourable elements. Which element a Ding chart is said to "need" depends on its season, its strength and the reader's method, so there is no single answer for all Ding Day Masters. Our calculator doesn't output a favourable element.

How Ding interacts with the other nine stems

The Yuanhai Ziping names the Ten Gods using Jia as its example, then the same generating / controlling logic is shifted to any Day Master. So for a Ding Day Master:

Stem Element Relation to Ding Ten God Notes
甲 Jia Yang Wood Produces Ding Direct Resource (印綬, i.e. 正印)
乙 Yi Yin Wood Produces Ding Indirect Resource (偏印; also 倒食, 梟神)
丙 Bing Yang Fire Same element, opposite polarity Rob Wealth (劫財)
丁 Ding Yin Fire Same element, same polarity Friend (比肩)
戊 Wu Yang Earth Ding produces it Hurting Officer (傷官)
己 Ji Yin Earth Ding produces it Eating God (食神)
庚 Geng Yang Metal Ding controls it Direct Wealth (正財)
辛 Xin Yin Metal Ding controls it Indirect Wealth (偏財)
壬 Ren Yang Water Controls Ding Direct Officer (正官) Combines with Ding (丁壬合)
癸 Gui Yin Water Controls Ding Seven Killings (七殺, also 偏官)

Ding and Ren combine. Ding–Ren is one of the five standard stem combinations. Our calculator doesn't model combinations.

Ding and Bing. Popular teaching sometimes says Bing "steals Ding's light". Treat that as a school saying to test against the whole chart, not as an automatic verdict.

Ten Gods are labels relative to the Day Master, not personality verdicts. For the naming logic in general, see How we calculate your chart.

Common misconceptions about Ding Fire

  • "Ding is my zodiac year element." Day Master ≠ year stem. See What is my Day Master?.
  • "Ding people are all quiet / artistic." The lamp image describes the stem, not the person.
  • "Bing always steals Ding's light." A popular teaching line exists, but whether Bing harms a given Ding chart depends on season, roots and the whole structure. The calculator does not output that as a rule.
  • "Ding is a candle." A modern memory aid for yin fire. The classical text says soft, centred, warm fire.

How modern readers describe Ding Fire

Modern guides often associate Ding with focus, refinement and steady warmth, extending the lamp / candle image. Some also mention sensitivity to being overshadowed. These are interpretations built on the classical image, not statements from the classical texts. You may recognise yourself in them or not. Neither result says anything about what will happen to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ding Fire yin or yang?

Yin. Ding is Yin Fire, and its yang partner is Bing.

What element is good for a Ding Fire Day Master?

It depends on the season and the chart's strength. There is no single answer. The Qiongtong Baojian recommendations above are one classical climate method; a strength-based reading would favour resource and companions for a weak Ding, and output, wealth and power for a strong one. Our calculator doesn't output a favourable element.

Which stem combines with Ding?

Ren (壬, Yang Water). Ding–Ren is one of the five classical stem combinations.

Is a Ding Fire Day Master the same as being born in a Fire year?

No. A Fire year means the year stem is one of the two Fire stems. A Ding Day Master means the day stem is Ding. You can have either without the other.

How do I find out if my Day Master is Ding?

Use the Day Master calculator. You only need your birth date (and whether you were born between 23:00 and midnight). The full chart also shows whether your Ding is weak or strong.

Why do some sites call Ding a "lamp" or "candle"?

Modern memory aids for yin fire. The Di Tian Sui says Ding is soft and centred with warmth within; it does not name a lamp as a technical term.
